When the title opens, we find ourselves looking at a five reel, 3 row and 20 payline reel set, centred upon a backdrop that makes no mistakes in resembling a jungle. You’ll also notice that the 5^th reel has symbols that land in a gold colour scheme, but more on that later. Gold Pile: Orangutan might have a few bonus features to help you out, but the game also requires players to wager quite high in order to get a decent return. But what is even less enduring is when you see that Rarestone Gaming has set the maximum bet at £500 per spin, which is ridiculous as almost no players are ever wagering that on a single spin. The wagering limit does start at only 10p, but for better returns, you’ll need to bet higher than that.

The symbols are simple, so making out the value of the win you’re landing should be pretty straightforward. The lower value icons are playing card symbols 9, 10, J, Q, K and A, with the K and A carrying the highest value. We then move to the medium paying symbols, consisting of hornbill, a pangolin, a jaguar, a bear and an elephant, with the elephant the highest paying of these. All the regular symbols have a gold version of themselves that appear on reel 5.

Look out for the orangutan, which acts as the scatter symbol. This one’s responsible for activating bonus play. There are also two wild symbols being the standard wild and the gold wild. Both will substitute all symbols, except the scatter and gold symbols, to create winning lines.

The scatter symbol is responsible for activating the free spins feature. Landing 3 or more on the same spin will give players eight free spins. However, landing two scatters on the same spin during the free spins adds four more spins to the round. Landing 3 or more will add another eight spins.

You’ll see to the left of the reels that a gold meter can be adjusted between 0 and 100%. This determines the ratio of symbols on reel 5 that will land as gold symbols. Landing winning combinations with gold symbols can lead to 3 different cash prizes – Mini, Maxi or grand. The Grand cash prize is triggered by entering the Grand Chase feature by achieving a winning combination with a gold symbol and no help from any wild symbols.

Gold Pile: Orangutan would be so much better if the wagering requirements were kinder to players. The low symbol values and massive bet limits mean that you can’t get much bang for your buck. The bonus features are good, but this just isn’t enough to mask our aforementioned concerns.
