La Casa De Papel, the little known locations of the show

Seasons 1 and 2 were primarily filmed in Madrid with the Royal Mint in Season1 being the main filming location. Of course, filming outside Spain’s Royal Mint would prove to be difficult (there is a ban on filming) so they used a different location, the Spanish National Research Council’s exterior that mimics the Royal Mint’s exterior.

Interior scenes were filmed in a studio in Colmenar Vijeo, Madrid. But how did they film the printing of the money?  Nairobi’s army of printers were in fact in ABC’s newspaper printing site where they printed out billions of euros!

PartyCasino takes a look at the worldwide phenomenon on Spanish TV series, La Casa De Papel, and reveals the little-known locations of the show

As the film flashbacks to the house where the heist was planned, we see the Professor bring together his team.  This is a rustic villa set in the countryside and the show names the location as La Casa de Toledo but it is in fact Casa Palacio with 11 rooms, 5 bathrooms, and kitchens.  Perfect for hosting weddings, parties and for criminal mastermind!

As La Casa De Papel’s viewers grew and it became a worldwide hit, Netflix were able to give more budget to the show, so we saw more variedlocations in the later series.

The gang turn to the Bank of Spain for their next audacious heist and use the Ministerio de Fomento (Ministry of Public Works and Transport) as the exterior of the bank.

Season 3 sees the Professor mastermind 140 million euros to fall from the sky, above a sea of people.   This scene was filmed in Callao Square, Madrid with the Professor’s face beaming from the huge screens surrounding it.

When the Professor brings the gang back to stop Rio’s detention by the Spanish Government, they plan their next heist in an Italian Monastery which is actually San Frutos Hermitage.  With breath taking views of the Hoces del Duraton Natural Park, Saint Fructus (San Frutos) established himself here as a hermit in the 8th century.

Through flashbacks we see the gang plan the heist at the Bank of Spain whilst enjoying dinners, playing a very competitive football match and even seeing the wedding of Berlin to Tatiana.  This location also sees the footballer Neymar make a cameo as a Benedictine monk. There are some truly exotic locations in the later seasons including Tokyo and Rio’s paradise island where they escape to after the heist at the Royal Mint.  This was filmed in one of the 400 islands of Guna Yana Islands.

We also see the Sanctuary of Truth Pattaya in Thailand feature in Season 3.  The scene where Tokyo finally meets up with The Professor to persuade him to help save Rio is set here.

Surely one of the most recognised locations is where we see Berlin in Florence.  He meets his brother outside the Piazza Del Duomo- we see this in Season 2, after Berlin has died so this is a flashback to before the heist.

It will be interesting to see where next the tv show will film for the fifth and final series expected later this year.  The show is loved worldwide and there’s even a number of games dedicated to the series. The final season hopes to pick up with the gang as they work out how to escape from the Bank of England.  Where in the world will the gang go to next? Could we see characters escape to their namesakes? Stockholm escaping to Sweden and Tokyo to Japan?  We can’t wait to find out!
